Amber Brown is Not a Crayon

Amber Brown is Not a Crayon by Paula Danziger

Amber Brown is a fun third grader who's best friend is Justin. They have been best friends since preschool. Now Justin's father got a new job and he is moving. This makes Amber Brown very upset.

I read this book because I wanted to see if it was like Judy Moody. I would recommend this book to Judy Moody and Clementine fans.

Flush

Flush by Carl Hiaasen

Noah's dad cares about the environment very much. So when he discovers that the gambling boat is dumping the bathroom stuff into the ocean he decides to sink the boat. This lands him in jail. Noah's dad has a reputation to taking things in his own hands. This time he doesn't want to bail himself out which upsets his whole family. Noah wants to prove to the town and his mother that Noah's dad is right, Dusty is dumping toilet remains into the ocean.

I read Flush because there was a disagreement about where it should be in the library. (J or YA) Even though I think this is a very mild YA story, it could stay in YA. I thought it was well written and interesting.

Sarah, Plain and Tall

Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan

Caleb and Anna lost their mother right after the birth of Caleb. Caleb wants to know everything he can about his mother. Now their Papa has put an ad in the New York Times for a wife and mother. They are hoping that Sarah will stay with them and love them like a mother. They are afraid because she might miss the sea too much to stay with them.

I remember loving this book as a child. I was so excited when they made a movie out of it. However, I think it lost something for me as an adult. I didn't love it as much as I did has a child. I wanted more from the author and her experiences with the kids.

The Capture

The Capture by Kathryn Lasky

I listened to this book because it's a very loved series by some and I wanted to know more about it. The main characters are owls who were stolen from their nests and put at St. Angus a "school for orphans" however, Soren and Gylfie know that they aren't orphans and there is something wrong about the school. They don't let owls be owls. Soren and Gylfie try to find a way to beat the school and escape back to their families.

Overall I ejoyed the story and I like the bits and pieces about owls. I know very little about owls so it was nice to hear the little facts about owls told through a story.

The Sense of an Ending

The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes

I read this for book club. It was a very short book, taking only a few hours to read it. I thought the writing was great, but I didn't love the book. I think it was a book that is meant to read through to totally understand what is going on. This book won the Booker prize this year.

Jenny and the Cat Club

Jenny and the Cat Club by Esther Averill

Anne Marie recommended this book to me to recommend to patrons when they want a good read aloud for small children. I didn't think I would like it but I started it and immediately decided that I should read it with Olivia. The language is great and the plots are simple enough for Olivia to follow and understand.

Jenny Linsky is a shy black cat but when he owner Captain Tinker gives a handmade red scarf she feels like she can do anything. She wants to be part of the cat club that meets nightly in the garden. They tell her that she needs a special talent. Captain Tinker makes her ice skating shoes and viola she has her special talent.

Each chapter is a new story of Jenny Linsky which makes them good stopping points with Olivia. I will be recommending this story to lots of parents and children in the future.

Redwall

Redwall. Book One, The Wall by Brian Jacques

I listened to this audiobook because Redwall is a very long popular series in juvenile fiction. Its about peaceful Abbey called Redwall in Mossflower Wood. They have lived in peace since Martin the Warrior fought and won for them a long time ago. Now Redwall is under attack again by Cluny, a terrible rat. Cluny wants to conquer Redwall and a young mouse named Mathias is going to save redwall.

This book is no-stop fighting action. I can see how a boy that like fantasy and action would enjoy it, but its just not my thing.

Julie of the Wolves

Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George

I have decided that it would be fun to try and read all the Newbery Award winners. I also decided to read this book because I get a lot of questions about it and if its appropriate for certain age groups. After reading it I think a fourth or fifth grader would be best for reading this book.

Julie is an orphan and is forced to live with her aunt. Then she is married to a boy who has learning disabilities. However, she is okay with this because she just helps her mother-in-law sew and she has a home and goes to school. However her husband tries to force her to be with him and she flees. She learns how to speak wolf and live with a pack of wolves.

This was a very quiet story but nice. I like the idea behind it and I'm glad that I read it.

Outlander

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

Many people have told me to read Outlander and so we read it for book discussion group. This is a love story between Claire and Jaime in Scotland in 1743. Claire lives in 1945 but she walks through a stone and gets transported back 1743. She is forced to marry Jaime to save her life but ends up falling in love with him. This is a part of a longer series.

The Future of Us

The Future of Us by Jay Asher & Carolyn Mackler

Its the 1990's and the Internet was just starting. Emma receives a new computer from her dad and her next-door neighbor Josh gives her a free AOL disk. When she installs AOL and logs in she discovers facebook. She is unsure what facebook is but she quickly discovers herself 10 years later. She shows Josh the website and they decide together to keep it a secret. Emma is upset because it seems like her future self is very unhappy. She begins to mess with her fate hoping to make things better.

I really enjoyed this book. Another winner from Asher. I loved the cultural references from the 90s. I wanted a little more from the ending, like what happens to Emma's best friend. But it was a great book.

There is sex and drinking mentioned in this book.

*I actually finished this book in 2011 but didn't record it in time.*

Alice, I Think

Alice, I Think by Susan Juby

I read this book on the recommendation of my branch manager, Sue. There were some funny parts, but I didn't think the book was awesome, just okay. Alice had a horrible experience when she was five and going into kindergarten. She thought she was a hobbit, so her mother let her go to school dressed like one. She was teased and they pulled her out and homeschooled her. Now as a teen she is trying to figure out about herself and the world. Her family is on the weird side which makes things interesting too.

The Fairy-Tale Detectives

The Fairy-Tale Detectives by Michael Buckley

Daphne and Sabrina Grimm's parents just disappeared one day. They have been shuttled from one foster house to the next when a grandma turns up. Daphne fells in love with her grandma immediately but Sabrina has some reservations about her. It turns out that Grandma Grimm lives in Ferryport Landing with fairytale characters. This leads the girls on a fairy tale adventure.

This was a fun read, I'm curious how the series will continue because they hit a lot of the fun fairytales. Jack from Jack and the Beanstalk was the bad guy and Prince Charming wasn't that wonderful either. Very entertaining.
